On October 11, 2023, Turtle Back Zoo signed the Association of Zoos & Aquarium (AZA)’s declaration to protect 30% of the planet by 2030. AZA is the top accrediting body for zoos and aquariums around North America with a mission to conserve and educate on natural environments and animals around the world. They have partnered with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) which is an organization that contains the Zoos and Aquariums around New York City and a Global Conservation Program that works with countries around the world to conserve and protect wildlife. These organizations have brought together more than 100 AZA accredited zoos and aquariums to sign the 30×30 Declaration.
In this declaration, these organizations have committed to using the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework that contains clearly defined goals for protecting 30% of the planet by 2030. The mission of these goals is to restore ecosystems, save threatened and endangered species, end illegal wildlife trade, and prevent future pandemics. AZA zoos spend $250 million annually on conservation and are able to educate tens of millions of visitors who visit their parks every day. Now, these organizations are working together under the same mission. With all of these organizations on the same path they can commit to protecting 30% of the planet by 2030. By signing this declaration, Turtle Back Zoo is committed to conserving wildlife around the world.
